Overhead cable railways (German abbreviation SHB), represent
a combination of aerial tramway and funicular. In Instead
of track cables, the carriers hang respectively the carriages
move on rails and are pulled by haul ropes.
The overhead cable railway from Steurer was originally
developed as an internal conveying system for the final
assembly of motor vehicles at BMW AG, where it is also
known as overhead wire rope conveyor.
The system overcomes gradients of up to 30° and curves
with narrow radii. With patented detachable rope grips,
the transported material can also be easily detached from
the rotary conveyor.
Since the transport units of the overhead cable railway
do not have separate drives, in contrast to the electrified
monorail system (EMS), both investment costs and repair
and maintenance costs are considerably lower, with greater
availability.
Today the overhead cable railway is a feature of various
BMW plants worldwide. |
